Pre-Workout

How do you know if you should be taking pre-workout?

Pre-workout is a tool, not a requirement. Here's how to tell if it's for you.

CBUM Essential pre-workout with scoop and shaker
TL;DRPre-workout is worth it if your energy or focus is the thing holding your sessions back, especially early mornings or after work. If you already train fired up, you don't need it. Start with half a scoop, never take it within about 6 hours of bed, and don't use it to paper over bad sleep.

Pre-workout isn't magic and it isn't cheating. It's a caffeine-and-performance blend that helps on the days you'd otherwise phone it in. Whether you need one comes down to a few honest questions.

Ask yourself these

Is energy the thing holding you back? If you turn up flat, drag through warm-ups, and your best sets never feel easy, pre-workout helps. If you're already bouncing off the walls, save your money.

When do you train? Early mornings and post-work sessions are where pre earns its keep. If you train at 9pm, the caffeine will wreck your sleep, which costs you more than the workout gains.

How's your caffeine tolerance? If a single coffee makes you jittery, start with half a scoop or a stim-free option.

How to use it without the downsides

Start with half a scoop to gauge your tolerance. Take it 20-30 minutes before you train. Don't take it within 6 hours of bed. And cycle off the caffeine occasionally so a normal dose keeps working.

One rule above all: don't use pre-workout to patch over no sleep and no food. It'll get you through the session, but you're borrowing energy you'll pay back later.

The bottom line
  • Pre-workout fixes flat energy and focus, nothing else.
  • Best for early or post-work training. Avoid it at night.
  • Start at half a scoop and find your tolerance.
  • It's a top-up, not a replacement for sleep and food.
