WADA has approved the 2027 Prohibited List, but approval and implementation happen on different dates. For NZ athletes, the useful next step is to prepare a review of the products you use, then check the published changes against the correct year's rules.

This article was checked on 14 September 2026. It explains the announcement available at that date.

What has WADA announced?

On 10 September 2026, WADA's Executive Committee approved the 2027 List. WADA said publication would follow before 1 October 2026, with the List taking effect on 1 January 2027. Its announcement describes limited modifications but does not provide the full revised List. Read WADA's committee update.

The 2026 List took effect on 1 January 2026. It remains the relevant annual List during the rest of 2026. WADA's 2026 announcement explains its scope.

Which date matters for your season?

When What to do
September 2026 Make a list of your current products and locate their packaging details.
When the 2027 documents are published Read the List alongside WADA's summary of changes, then resolve anything relevant to your sport.
Before using products in 2027 Complete the review against the rules that take effect on 1 January.

That schedule is our suggested way to organise the job. Put the review before your first competition of the year, rather than leaving it for the evening you pack your bag.

Build a useful product list now

A note that says "protein, creatine, electrolytes" leaves too much work for later. Record the full product name, flavour and batch or lot code. A photo of the front and back of each pack makes the next check much easier.

For example, someone using two flavours of the same powder should create two entries. If a replacement tub arrives with a different batch code, give it a new entry too. This is a filing suggestion, not a statement about any particular product's certification.

Keep medicines in a separate part of that list so you can take medication questions through the appropriate anti-doping checking route. A supplement registry and a medicine check answer different questions. Avoid making changes to prescribed treatment based on a supplement article.

How does sport testing fit into the review?

Informed Sport provides a product and batch search for its certification programme. Its athlete guidance recommends looking up the relevant product details. Use the official Informed Sport athlete resources.

When you review a product, keep two questions separate: what does the current anti-doping guidance require, and what evidence can you find for this exact supplement? An annual rules update is not a replacement for checking what you bought.

Our guide to Informed Sport certified supplements explains the product checks in more detail. Use it while you have the pack beside you, so you can compare names and codes without guessing.

Where NZ Supps fits

You can start your shortlist in our tested-for-sport collection. One product example is Pillar Performance Whey Protein Isolate in Vanilla. It is included here as a shopping example; WADA's announcement does not identify or assess that product.

Choose a supplement only if it serves a purpose in your nutrition plan. Then check the exact item and batch using the relevant programme's records. A familiar tub design is useful for finding the product, but the printed details are what you need for the check.

Questions about the 2027 announcement

Has the 2027 Prohibited List already taken effect?

No. WADA gives 1 January 2027 as the effective date. Keep the approval, publication and effective dates distinct when reading news about it.

Can I see every 2027 change in this article?

No. At our 14 September check, the announcement said the full List would be published before October. Use the final official documents when they are available.

Should I buy a whole year's supplements now?

There is no purchasing instruction in this news. A more useful task is to organise your product details so your next review is straightforward.

Does WADA approve sport-tested supplements?

No. New Zealand's Sport Integrity Commission says WADA does not approve supplements. Describe a product by its actual independent testing programme, and avoid treating any logo as a guarantee.
