Energy Drinks for Work and Study (Not Just the Gym)

Moderate-caffeine energy drinks suited to a work or study session rather than a workout, with real NZ Supps products, ingredients and prices.

Most energy drink marketing is aimed squarely at the gym, but a lot of our customers are reaching for a can at a desk, not a squat rack. If that's you, the training-dosed cans with 2000mg beta-alanine aren't really the point. What matters more is a caffeine level you can sustain through an afternoon without a hard crash, in a can that isn't loaded with sugar you don't need while you're sitting at a keyboard.

Why the moderate band makes sense for desk work

In our caffeine bands guide we split the range into light, moderate, strong and max. For work or study, the moderate band, roughly 80 to 120mg per can, tends to fit best. It's enough to lift you without the jitteriness or crash risk that can come with a 200mg can on an empty stomach at 2pm, and it's a dose most people can drink again the next day without building up too fast a tolerance.

Three products in our canned energy range sit in or near this band:

  • Ghost Energy RTD 250ml, 80mg caffeine, 500mg taurine, 50mg NeuroFactor, 45mg vitamin C, sugar free, around 8 calories. The lowest-caffeine can in our zero-sugar range, available in Peach, Creaming Soda, Warheads Watermelon and Original.
  • Bucked Up Energy, 105mg caffeine, 1200mg taurine, 300mg L-arginine, green tea and B-vitamins, under 1g sugar. A step up from Ghost's 250ml can if 80mg isn't quite enough to get you through a longer block of work.
  • Alani Energy, 110mg caffeine, 787mg taurine, B-vitamin blend, zero sugar. A similar dose to Bucked Up, with a wider flavour lineup to choose from (six flavours in total).

What's actually in these, ingredient-wise

These three cans lean on taurine as their main support ingredient, ranging from 500mg in Ghost's 250ml can up to 1200mg in Bucked Up, alongside B-vitamins. Taurine and B-vitamins are common inclusions in energy formulas generally; we're not going to make claims here about what they do for you specifically, just tell you what's printed on the can so you can look into it yourself if you're curious. Ghost's 250ml can also carries 50mg of NeuroFactor, a coffee-fruit extract that shows up in a number of formulas marketed around focus and alertness.

If you want more caffeine for a longer or harder study block, Ghost's 500ml can (160mg caffeine, 1000mg taurine, 1000mg L-carnitine, 150mg Alpha-GPC) and Ryse Fuel (200mg caffeine, 200mg Cognizin Citicoline) both sit in the strong band rather than moderate. They're worth knowing about, but probably not your 10am pick if you've still got a full day of work or study ahead of you.

Sipping vs slamming

A can built for a desk session works differently to one built for a warm-up. There's no need to drink a 355ml can in one go before you sit down. Spreading it across the first hour of a study block, or a meeting-heavy morning, means the caffeine comes in gradually rather than all at once, which is generally a more comfortable way to take it if you're not used to a bigger hit of stimulant first thing.

A sensible afternoon cut-off

Caffeine has a half-life of several hours, so a can at 3 or 4pm can still be in your system come bedtime. If you're using energy drinks to get through a long study session or a late shift, it's worth setting yourself an honest cut-off time rather than reaching for another can every time your focus dips. That's common sense rather than anything specific to our range, but it's easy to lose track of once you're deep in a task and the afternoon's slipped away from you.
