Caffeine Bands Explained: How Strong Is Your Energy Drink?

Every energy drink can lists a caffeine figure on the back, but that number on its own doesn't tell you much unless you know what it's being compared to. A more useful way to think about it is in bands: light, moderate, strong, and max. Once you know roughly where a can sits, it's much easier to match the drink to what you're actually doing that day, rather than just grabbing whatever's on special.

The four caffeine bands

Light: up to 80mg

Roughly the caffeine content of a standard cup of instant coffee. In our range this is the Ghost Energy RTD 250ml line (Peach, Creaming Soda, Warheads Watermelon and Original), sitting at 80mg caffeine per can alongside 500mg taurine, 50mg NeuroFactor and 45mg vitamin C. It's the lowest-dose can in our canned-energy range and a sensible starting point if you're caffeine-sensitive, new to energy drinks, or just want something to sip through the morning rather than slam before you walk out the door.

Moderate: 80 to 120mg

This band covers roughly a flat white to two coffees' worth of caffeine. Two ranges sit here: Bucked Up Energy at 105mg caffeine with 1200mg taurine and 300mg L-arginine, and Alani Energy at 110mg caffeine with 787mg taurine. Both come in 355ml cans, both are zero sugar, and this is the band most people land in on a normal working day rather than a training day.

Strong: 150 to 200mg

This is where most of the NZ Supps canned-energy range actually sits. Cellucor C4 Carbonated RTD (473ml) comes in at 150mg caffeine plus 2000mg beta-alanine and 1650mg L-citrulline, which makes it more of a training-focused formula in a can than a straight energy drink. The 500ml Ghost Energy RTD and the Nexus PER4M RTD both land at 160mg caffeine, and Ryse Fuel Energy Drink tops out the canned-energy range at 200mg caffeine per 473ml can, paired with 200mg Cognizin Citicoline.

Max: 200mg and above

Nothing in our canned RTD range currently goes past 200mg. Ryse Fuel sits at the top of that particular format. Caffeine north of 200mg mostly shows up in dosed pre-workout powders rather than ready-to-drink cans, because a powder scoop is far easier to dose precisely than a sealed can. How to actually use this

A simple rule of thumb: match the band to the task, not the flavour on the shelf. If you're going to be sipping across a few hours at a desk, an 80 to 110mg can tends to last longer and won't leave you crashing before lunch. If you're heading into a heavy training session and want it done and dusted in one go before you warm up, the 150 to 200mg band is built for that instead.

It's also worth remembering that caffeine tolerance is individual. Someone who drinks two coffees a day will feel a 105mg can very differently to someone who rarely touches caffeine at all. If you're unsure where you sit, start at the lower end of a band and see how you go, rather than jumping straight to the strongest can on the shelf.
