Best Amino Acid Supplements NZ - Xtend - Blue Raspberry Ice, Ghost BCAA V2 - Strawberry Watermelon, Raw Nutrition EAA - Strawberry Lemonade

You are standing in front of a wall of brightly coloured tubs, all promising recovery, and the price tags run from $47.85 to $127.95. Nobody tells you what the difference actually is, or what each scoop costs. Here is the honest version: if you already eat enough protein, an amino tub will not add much muscle, and most people buy one because it makes water taste good enough to drink during a session. That is a real reason, just not the one on the label.

The short answer

  • Cheapest amino serve we stock: EHPlabs Beyond BCAA+EAA at $64.90 for 60 serves, or $1.08 a serve. Stock is low on every flavour.
  • Best value on a proven BCAA: the 90 serve Xtend tub at $127.95 works out at $1.42 a serve, against $1.82 a serve for the 30 serve tub at $54.45.
  • Ghost BCAA V2 is $47.85 for 30 serves, or $1.60 a serve, with 7 g of BCAA per scoop, the same BCAA total as Xtend. If you go this way, Ghost BCAA flavours ranked will help you pick a flavour.
  • If you train fasted or eat low protein, pick an EAA instead. Raw Nutrition EAA is $58.95 for 25 serves, or $2.36 a serve, rated 4.88 from 99 reviews.

What BCAA, EAA and intra actually mean

BCAA means three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine, usually in a 2:1:1 ratio. Xtend, Ghost BCAA V2 and Basic Supplements BCAA all land on 3.5 g leucine, 1.75 g isoleucine and 1.75 g valine, so 7 g total per scoop.

EAA means all nine essential amino acids, the three above plus six more your body cannot make. That matters because muscle protein needs the full set, not just the trigger. Leucine starts the process, the other eight supply the bricks.

Intra workout products are built to be sipped through a session rather than knocked back in one go. Ghost Intra is a 22 g scoop with 6 g of BCAA and 1 g of taurine, at 10 calories, so it is a sipping drink rather than a carb drink. If you want fuel for a long session, that is a carbohydrate question, not an amino one.

Does anyone actually need one?

Probably not, if your protein is already sorted. Examine's review of branched chain amino acids concludes that BCAA supplementation does not meaningfully increase muscle gain when total protein intake is adequate, because you are adding three aminos to a diet that already delivers all nine. Morton's 2018 analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine put the useful ceiling for total protein at roughly 1.6 g per kg of bodyweight per day, with the confidence interval reaching 2.2 g. Hit that from food and whey and a BCAA tub is a flavour purchase.

The case is stronger in two spots. Training fasted before breakfast, an EAA gives you the full amino profile with almost no calories. Eating well under your protein target, for instance while cutting hard or on a plant-based diet, an EAA also fills gaps a BCAA cannot.

For comparison, MusclePharm Combat 100% Whey is $152.95 for 70 serves, or $2.19 a serve, and each of those serves has 25 g of protein. A $1.82 Xtend serve gives you 7 g of three aminos. Per gram of actual amino acid, whey wins, easily. Read our protein target guide before you buy anything in this category.

Xtend EAA EAA 40 $54.45 $1.36 Yes No Currently out of stock

Two notes on that table. C4 Energy + Amino is the odd one out, because it is a caffeinated drink with a small amino dose attached, so treat it as a light pre-workout you happen to sip. And Ghost Intra is the most expensive serve on the list by a wide margin, which is worth knowing before the tub arrives.

Unflavoured amino acids, and what we honestly have

Searches for unflavoured BCAA in NZ are common, usually from people stacking their own intra drink with creatine and electrolytes. Right now we do not have an unflavoured BCAA or EAA in stock. Raw Nutrition Intra Workout in unflavoured, $107.95 for 60 serves, is out of stock, and the unflavoured aminos on the shelf are glutamine.

Worth saying plainly: glutamine is not a muscle builder. Basic Supplements Glutamine is $58.95 for 60 serves of 5 g, and MusclePharm Glutamine Essentials is $49.45 for the same 300 g. Neither will move your training. If you want an unflavoured powder to stack, unflavoured whey does more for the same money, and citrulline malate is a better addition to a homemade intra drink than extra leucine.

A sample week, with the numbers

Say you weigh 80 kg and train four times a week. Your protein target at 1.6 g per kg is 128 g a day. Three meals at roughly 35 g each gets you to about 105 g, and one whey shake at 25 g clears it.

At that point a BCAA adds nothing to the total that matters. If you buy one anyway, buy the cheap-per-serve version: the 90 serve Xtend at $1.42 saves you $36 over three 30 serve tubs.

Now change one thing. You train at 6am with nothing but coffee. Your first amino hit is at 9am. That is the case for an EAA before the session, and Raw Nutrition EAA at $2.36 a serve is the one we would reach for, on the strength of a 4.88 rating from 99 reviews.

The common mistakes are simple. Buying an amino tub before you own a protein powder. Sipping a caffeinated amino at 7pm and wondering why sleep is bad. And paying $3.24 a serve for an intra drink when a $1.60 scoop plus water does the same job in the gym.

Where NZ Supps fits

We are based in New Zealand, we dispatch same day on orders placed before 1pm, and shipping is free over $70. That is the whole pitch.

If you have read this and decided you want an amino tub, the EAA and intra workout range is where they live. If you have decided protein comes first, start with whey instead, and come back for aminos later. Not sure which you are? Find your stack matches products to your goal in a couple of minutes, and it will tell you to skip things if you do not need them.

Do BCAAs actually work?

For muscle growth, not much, once your total protein intake is adequate. Examine's BCAA review is clear that adding three amino acids to a diet already containing all nine has little effect. They do make water taste good, which keeps some people drinking during a session.

Is EAA better than BCAA?

For building muscle, yes, because EAA covers all nine essential amino acids rather than three. The gap matters most when you train fasted or eat below your protein target. Our full comparison is in EAA vs BCAA.

What is the cheapest BCAA per serve in NZ?

Of what we stock, EHPlabs Beyond BCAA+EAA at $1.08 a serve, though stock is thin. Among the big tubs, the 90 serve Xtend at $127.95 comes to $1.42 a serve, versus $1.60 for Ghost BCAA V2 and $1.82 for the 30 serve Xtend.

Do amino acid supplements have caffeine?

Most do not. Xtend, Ghost BCAA V2, Basic Supplements BCAA, Raw Nutrition EAA and Ghost Intra are all caffeine free. Cellucor C4 Energy + Amino is the exception, since it is built around an energy blend.

Can I take BCAA and creatine together?

Yes, they do different jobs and neither blocks the other. Creatine is the one with the stronger evidence behind it, so if you can only buy one, buy creatine. See our creatine guide for dosing.

Do I need an intra workout drink?

Only for long or very hard sessions, and even then the useful ingredient is usually carbohydrate rather than aminos. Ghost Intra is 10 calories a serve, so it is a flavour and sipping habit. We go into it properly in do you need an intra workout.
