You are in front of the fridge at 2pm with a shift or a session ahead of you, and every can is shouting a different number at you. Some hold 80 mg of caffeine, some double that, and the price gap is bigger than the caffeine gap. Here is the honest version: Ghost Energy 500ml wins on caffeine per dollar at $3.09 per 100 mg, and nearly every can we stock is already sugar-free, so sugar is not what separates them.

The short answer

  • Best value caffeine: Ghost Energy RTD 500ml, 160 mg for $4.95, which works out at $3.09 per 100 mg of caffeine.
  • Strongest cans we stock: Ghost Energy 500ml and Nexus PER4M RTD 500ml, both 160 mg.
  • Lowest calorie: Ryse Fuel at 0 calories, then Nexus PER4M at 2, then Bucked Up at 4.4.
  • Smallest sensible dose: Ghost Energy 250ml, 80 mg for $3.95, which is roughly a strong flat white.
  • Every can in the table below is sugar-free except Nexus PER4M at 0.1 g, so pick on caffeine, size and price instead.

How we ranked them

We ranked by price per 100 mg of caffeine, cheapest first. Caffeine is the ingredient people are actually buying, and this rule lets you compare a 250ml can against a 500ml one without doing maths in the aisle.

Every single can we stock, ranked

Single cans only, in stock as at 2 September 2026. Case packs are covered further down.

Can Size Caffeine Caffeine /100 ml Sugar Calories Price Price /100 mg caffeine
Ghost Energy RTD 500ml 500 ml 160 mg 32.0 mg 0 g 5 $4.95 $3.09
Nexus PER4M RTD 500 ml 160 mg 32.0 mg 0.1 g 2 $6.79 $4.24
Cellucor C4 Carbonated 473 ml 150 mg 31.7 mg 0 g 30 $6.79 $4.53
Ryse Fuel 473 ml 150 mg 31.7 mg 0 g 0 $6.79 $4.53
Ghost Energy RTD 250ml 250 ml 80 mg 32.0 mg 0 g 8 $3.95 $4.94
Alani Nu Energy 355 ml 110 mg 31.0 mg 0 g 13 $5.94 $5.40
Bucked Up Energy 355 ml 105 mg 30 mg under 1 g 4.4 $5.94 $5.66

What jumps out is how tight the concentration is. Every can sits between 31.0 and 32.0 mg per 100 ml. Brands are not selling different strengths, they are selling different sizes of the same strength. A 500ml Ghost is just twice as much drink as a 250ml Ghost.

Which caffeine band suits which job

The range falls into four bands, and each has a job it does well.

80 mg is the desk band. Ghost Energy 250ml is the only can here, and it sits right where a strong coffee sits. Good at 10am when you want to be sharper without feeling wired at 4pm.

105 to 110 mg is the everyday band. Bucked Up and Alani Nu live here, and neither will keep you up if you drink one before mid-afternoon.

150 mg is the gym band. C4 Carbonated and Ryse Fuel are the two, and C4 also carries 1,650 mg of citrulline and 2,000 mg of beta alanine, which is why it reads more like a pre-workout in a can. We compared the two categories in where a can stops and a pre-workout starts.

160 mg is the top of the range: Ghost 500ml and Nexus PER4M. This is the night shift and the 5am start band, and the one where your daily total needs watching. We break the bands down further in our caffeine guide.

What the caffeine research actually says

EFSA landed on two numbers worth remembering. Up to 400 mg a day from all sources is not a safety concern for healthy adults, and single doses up to 200 mg, or about 3 mg per kg of bodyweight, are fine in one sitting.

Run that against the table. At 70 kg, 3 mg per kg is 210 mg, so any can here fits inside a single dose with room to spare. At 55 kg it is 165 mg, so a 160 mg Ghost 500ml sits right at the line and the 250ml version is the smarter pick.

The daily cap is where people trip up. Two Ghost 500ml cans is 320 mg before you count coffee, and two coffees on top puts you over 400 mg. The cans are not the problem, the stacking is.

Is "natural" energy worth paying for

Mostly, no. Caffeine from green coffee bean extract and caffeine from a lab are the same molecule at the same dose. The word on the front tells you about sourcing, not about how the drink performs.

Same goes for "healthy" energy drinks. There are only cans with less sugar and fewer calories, which is nearly all of them now. Everything in our table is sugar-free except a trace 0.1 g in Nexus PER4M, and the range tops out at 30 calories. If sweeteners are your worry, we covered what they actually do separately.

What does change between cans is the extras. Ghost adds 150 mg of alpha-GPC, Bucked Up adds 300 mg of arginine, C4 adds citrulline and beta alanine. Real ingredients at real doses, but none of them justify a dollar more if the caffeine maths does not stack up.

Singles or a case: the numbers are not what you expect

The usual rule is that a case is cheaper per can. Right now that rule breaks in both directions.

Ryse Fuel is the standout case buy. The 12-pack is $44.99, which is $3.75 a can against $6.79 for a single. Alani Nu drops to $5.33 a can in the 24-pack at $127.95, and Bucked Up to $5.42 in the 12-pack at $65.00.

Ghost goes the other way. The 500ml 12-pack at $68.85 is $5.74 a can against $4.95 for a single, and the 250ml 12-pack at $51.85 is $4.32 against $3.95. If you want Ghost, buy singles. That is a temporary pricing quirk, so check before you commit to a case. More on that in our price per serve breakdown.

A sane way to use them

Pick a can that fits the job, not the strongest on the shelf. If you already drink coffee in the morning, a 250ml Ghost in the afternoon keeps your day well under 400 mg. If the can replaces coffee entirely, one 500ml is your whole day sorted.

Caffeine has a half life of around five hours, so a 160 mg can at 4pm still leaves about 80 mg in you at 9pm. If you want to sleep by 10pm, the last can should be an early afternoon one. And if a 150 mg can starts to feel like nothing, the fix is a few days off, not a bigger can.

Where NZ Supps fits

We are based in New Zealand, we dispatch same day on orders placed before 1pm, and shipping is free over $99. All of these cans sit in one place on our canned energy shelf, with the caffeine and calorie numbers on each listing.

If you are not sure which band suits you, find your stack matches a product to what you are doing. And if a can is standing in for a training drink, the pre-workout range is better value per dose. We will say so rather than sell you the can.

What is the strongest energy drink in NZ?

Of what we stock, Ghost Energy RTD 500ml and Nexus PER4M RTD 500ml tie at 160 mg per can, and they are also the biggest at 500ml. Nothing in our range goes higher.

What is the best energy drink for the gym?

C4 Carbonated at 150 mg is closest to a pre-workout, since it also carries 1,650 mg of citrulline and 2,000 mg of beta alanine. Ryse Fuel matches the 150 mg with zero calories if you only want the stimulant.

Which energy drink has the lowest calories?

Ryse Fuel at 0 calories, then Nexus PER4M at 2 and Bucked Up at 4.4. The highest is C4 Carbonated at 30, still less than a slice of bread.

Are there any energy drinks with no sugar in NZ?

Nearly all of them. Every can in our table is 0 g of sugar except Nexus PER4M, which has a trace 0.1 g. We ranked the sugar-free options separately in our zero sugar roundup.

How many energy drinks a day is too many?

EFSA puts 400 mg of caffeine a day as the point where healthy adults should stop, counting coffee too. That is two and a half Ghost 500ml cans and nothing else. Treat one can a day as normal and two as the ceiling.

Is a natural energy drink better for you?

Not in any way you would feel. Plant-extract caffeine and lab caffeine behave identically at the same dose, so "natural" describes sourcing rather than effect.
