CBUM Essential vs Essentials Charged: 200mg or 350mg?

Two tubs, same label style, same shelf. One says Essential, the other says Charged. The real question in CBUM Essential vs Charged is simple: how much caffeine do you actually want in your system before you train?

Here is the honest answer. Most people are better served by Essential on most days. Charged earns its place on early, flat or heavy sessions, once you know you handle stimulants well.

The short answer

  • Pick CBUM Essential if you train most days, train in the evening, or are still working out your caffeine tolerance. It carries 200mg of natural caffeine.
  • Pick Essentials Charged if you are an experienced stim user who wants a harder kick. It carries 350mg of caffeine anhydrous plus Dynamine, theobromine and Alpha-GPC.
  • Not sure? Start with Essential, or run Charged at half a scoop until you know how it sits.
  • Want both? Plenty of lifters keep Essential as the daily driver and save Charged for the big days.

Same base, different stim stack

Both tubs come from Chris Bumstead's CBUM range, and both follow the same idea. Every dose is printed on the label, with no proprietary blend hiding what is inside. Essential is the stripped-back daily pre, with a pump and endurance base and a moderate caffeine hit.

Charged keeps that philosophy and changes the part you feel most: the stimulants. Essential runs on 200mg of natural caffeine. Charged steps up to 350mg of caffeine anhydrous and adds three extras:

  • Dynamine: a caffeine-like stimulant that adds to the energy lift.
  • Theobromine: the milder stimulant found in cocoa.
  • Alpha-GPC: a choline source included for focus.

So you are not really choosing between two products. You are choosing between two intensity settings. If you are also weighing up the pump-focused CBUM option, our Thavage vs Essential guide covers that matchup.

Side by side

CBUM Essential Essentials Charged
Caffeine per scoop 200mg natural caffeine 350mg caffeine anhydrous
Extra stimulants None Dynamine, theobromine, Alpha-GPC
Best for Daily training, evening sessions, newer stim users Early mornings, heavy days, high tolerance

Essential sits comfortably with our moderate-stim pre-workouts. Charged belongs with the strong-stim options.

How to choose by tolerance

The ISSN position stand on caffeine puts the useful performance range at about 3 to 6mg per kilogram of body weight, taken before training. For healthy adults, European food safety guidance sets the daily ceiling at about 400mg from all sources.

Run the numbers for a 70kg lifter:

  • 3mg/kg: 70 x 3 = 210mg. That is almost exactly one scoop of Essential.
  • 5mg/kg: 350mg. That is a full scoop of Charged, near the top of the range.
  • 6mg/kg: 420mg. That is past the 400mg daily ceiling, so there is no reason to chase the top end.

The practical take: at 70kg, Essential already puts you in the performance range. Charged gives you more, but it also spends most of your daily caffeine budget in one drink. Add a morning flat white and an afternoon energy drink and you are over.

Lighter lifters should take that seriously. At 55kg, a full scoop of Charged works out to more than 6mg/kg. Heavier lifters with a regular coffee habit will find Charged sits more comfortably.

Timing matters too. Caffeine lingers for hours, so 350mg at 6pm is a good way to lie awake at midnight. If you train after work, Essential is kinder on your sleep.

The half-scoop strategy for Charged

If Charged appeals but you are not sure you need 350mg, split the scoop. Half a scoop is roughly 175mg of caffeine, a little under a full scoop of Essential. You still get the Dynamine and Alpha-GPC, just at a lower dose.

Here is a sensible way to test it:

  1. Try half a scoop on a normal training day, not before a max-effort session.
  2. Note how the session feels and how you sleep that night.
  3. Only move to a full scoop if half felt clean and you still wanted more.

Half-scooping also roughly doubles the sessions you get from a tub. For more on how dose changes the feel, read what a half scoop changes.

Where NZ Supps fits

We stock both tubs alongside the rest of our CBUM pre-workouts, so you can keep one of each and pick by the day. We carry more Essential flavours than Charged, so if taste is the tiebreaker, check our ranking of the CBUM Essential flavours.

FAQ

How much caffeine is in CBUM Essentials Charged? Charged has 350mg of caffeine anhydrous per scoop, plus Dynamine, theobromine and Alpha-GPC. Regular CBUM Essential has 200mg of natural caffeine and none of those extra stimulants.

Is CBUM Essential good for beginners? Of the two, Essential is the better starting point because it carries 200mg of caffeine rather than 350mg. If you rarely drink coffee, start with half a scoop and see how you feel before going to a full one.

Can I take Essentials Charged every day? You can if you tolerate it well, but a full scoop uses most of the roughly 400mg daily caffeine ceiling for healthy adults. Many lifters keep Charged for heavy or early sessions and use Essential the rest of the week, which also helps keep tolerance in check.

How late in the day can I take a CBUM pre-workout? Caffeine stays in your system for hours, so a late scoop can easily cost you sleep. If you train in the evening, Essential or half a scoop of Charged is the kinder option, and a stim-free pre is worth considering for late sessions.

What is the difference between CBUM Essential and Charged apart from caffeine? Both follow the same fully disclosed, no proprietary blend approach from the CBUM range. The main change is the stimulant stack: Charged adds Dynamine, theobromine and Alpha-GPC on top of its higher caffeine dose.
