Macro Mike has teamed up with Kellogg's to turn three cereal-box favourites into plant protein: Coco Pops, Froot Loops and Nutri-Grain. It is a fun idea, but fun does not help you pick a flavour. Here is what is actually in the bag, how each one drinks, and which one to buy first.

The short answer

  • Safest first buy: Coco Pops. Chocolate is easy to like and the easiest to mix into anything.
  • Best for breakfast: Nutri-Grain. It reads the most like a morning bowl of cereal.
  • Most fun: Froot Loops. Light, fruity and a bit playful.
  • Same macros across the board: 23g of plant protein per 40g serve, dairy free and gluten free. Pick on taste.

What the range actually is

This is not a whey protein with cereal flavouring on top. Every bag in the Kellogg's line uses Macro Mike's almond and faba bean blend, so it is fully plant based. Each 40g serve gives you 23g of protein for roughly 144 to 146 calories and about 5g of carbs.

The range is dairy free, gluten free and made in Australia. A 400g bag gives you 10 serves, and an 800g bag gives you 20. If you are weighing up the base itself, our post on almond vs peanut protein explains how the two Macro Mike blends differ.

The three flavours

Coco Pops

Coco Pops protein is the one most people reach for first, and it makes sense. Alkalised cocoa does the heavy lifting, so it drinks like a chocolate milk rather than a novelty flavour.

It is also the most flexible. Blend it with a banana, stir it through oats, or roll it into Coco Pops protein balls for an easy snack. If you already know you love it, the Coco Pops 800g bag is the better value.

Froot Loops

Froot Loops is the most playful of the three. It mixes to a lighter, fruitier shake than the chocolate, more lolly bowl than milkshake.

This is the one to pick if chocolate shakes bore you. It is less of an all-rounder in recipes, but as a straight shake with cold milk or water it is a nice change of pace.

Nutri-Grain

Nutri-Grain reads closest to a breakfast bowl of the three. It is the pick for people who want a protein shake that feels like a meal rather than dessert.

It pairs well with oats and milk if you want something more filling in the morning. If you tend to skip breakfast, this is the easiest flavour to turn into one.

Macros per serve

All numbers are per 40g serve, from the product labels.

Flavour Protein Calories Carbs
Coco Pops 23g 144.4 5.0g
Froot Loops 23g 146.2 5.0g
Nutri-Grain 23g 144.8 5.1g

The differences are tiny. You will not notice one or two calories, so let your taste buds decide.

How to mix it

Plant protein behaves a little differently from whey, so a couple of small habits help. Use a shaker with a mixing ball or a blender rather than a spoon and a glass. Add your liquid first, then the powder, and give it a proper shake.

Milk makes all three flavours richer and closer to the cereal-bowl taste. Water keeps the calories down and is fine for Froot Loops in particular. If a shake feels too thick, add a splash more liquid and it will loosen up.

400g vs 800g: which size?

Start with the 400g if you have not tried the range before. Ten serves is enough to know whether you like a flavour without committing to a big bag. It also means you can grab two different flavours and swap between them.

Move to the 800g once you have a favourite. At current prices it works out close to a dollar cheaper per shake, and 20 serves covers most people for a month of weekday shakes. All three flavours come in both sizes.

FAQ

How much protein is in Macro Mike Kellogg's protein? Each 40g serve has 23g of protein from a blend of almond and faba bean. That is the same across Coco Pops, Froot Loops and Nutri-Grain, so you can pick purely on flavour.

Is Macro Mike Kellogg's protein dairy free? Yes. The whole range is dairy free and gluten free, because the protein comes from almond and faba bean rather than whey. That makes it a good fit if dairy does not agree with you.

Which Macro Mike Kellogg's flavour should I try first? Coco Pops is the safest first buy because chocolate is easy to like and easy to mix. Pick Nutri-Grain if you want something that feels like breakfast, or Froot Loops if you like a lighter, fruitier shake.

Should I buy the 400g or 800g bag? Buy 400g (10 serves) if it is your first bag or you want to try more than one flavour. Once you know you like it, the 800g bag (20 serves) works out cheaper per shake.

Can I bake with Coco Pops protein powder? Yes. It works well in no-bake recipes like protein balls and in overnight oats. Plant protein tends to soak up more liquid than whey, so add a little extra milk or water than a recipe expects.
