Walk into the amino aisle and you get three tubs that look almost identical: BCAA, EAA and glutamine. Same size, same bright flavours, prices that overlap. The labels do not make it obvious which one belongs in your gym bag.
Here is the honest version. Most people asking this question only need one of them, and a decent number do not need any of them because their protein intake is already sorted. This guide sorts out who each one is for.
The short answer
- BCAA is three amino acids. EAA is all nine essential ones, including those three. If you are picking on completeness alone, EAA wins.
- Glutamine is a single amino, sold plain and cheap, usually stirred into a shake rather than sipped for flavour.
- Intra workout tubs are the sip-through-training format: aminos plus carbs and electrolytes in a bigger serve.
- If you already hit your protein target most days, none of these are urgent. They are flavour, hydration and habit more than they are a missing nutrient.
BCAA: the flavoured sipper
BCAA covers leucine, isoleucine and valine. It is the oldest of these categories and still the most popular, which is why our BCAA range runs to 34 products while glutamine sits at five.
Realistically, the reason people buy BCAA in 2026 is the drink. It tastes good, it has no sugar hit to speak of, and it gives you something to work through during a long session instead of plain water. That is a genuine reason to buy something. It just is not the same as a nutrient gap. If you want caffeine in the same bottle, see our guide to aminos with caffeine.
Three that move well here: Ghost BCAA V2 in Lemon Crush at 30 serves, Xtend in Blue Raspberry Ice which is the tub most people picture when they hear the word BCAA, and Basic Supplements BCAA in Candy Burst if you want the flavour without the branded price.
Worth knowing: Xtend also sells the same Blue Raspberry Ice in a 1.26kg, 90 serve tub. If you drink one every session, the bigger tub is the cheaper habit.
EAA: the more complete option
EAA gives you all nine essential amino acids. Your body cannot make those on its own, so they have to come from food or a supplement. Our EAA range covers 28 products.
This is the pick if you are training fasted, eating light through the day, or on a plant-heavy diet where hitting leucine takes more planning. It is also the pick if you were about to buy BCAA and want the more complete label for a similar price.
Good starting points: Xtend EAA in Watermelon at 40 serves, Raw Nutrition EAA in Kiwi Blueberry at 25 serves, and EHPlabs Beyond BCAA+EAA in Fijian Pineapple, which runs 60 serves and covers both categories in one tub.
That EHPlabs tub is the one we point people to when they cannot decide. Sixty serves is a long-running tub, and you stop having to pick a side.
Glutamine: plain, cheap, small range
Glutamine is a single amino acid, sold unflavoured, and it mixes into whatever you are already drinking. Our glutamine range is deliberately small at five products, because that reflects what people actually buy.
All three plain options are 300g and 60 serves: Basic Supplements Glutamine, MusclePharm Glutamine Essentials and GAT Sport Essentials L-Glutamine. There is very little between them on paper, so buy on price and what is in stock.
Be honest with yourself about why you want it. Glutamine is popular with people training five or six days a week who want one more small thing in the routine. It is not a substitute for eating enough.
Intra workout: the sip-through format
The intra workout range is only seven products, and it is a different job to the rest. These tubs pair aminos with carbs and electrolytes so there is actual fuel in the bottle, not just flavour.
Two worth a look: Ghost Intra in Lemon Lime at 440g and 20 serves, and Raw Nutrition Intra Workout in unflavoured, a 1.62kg tub at 60 serves. If your sessions run past an hour, or you train twice in a day, this is the category that earns its spot.
The unflavoured question, answered plainly
A lot of people search for unflavoured BCAA or unflavoured amino acids in New Zealand, so here is the straight answer: we do not stock an unflavoured BCAA or an unflavoured EAA. Every BCAA and EAA tub in our range is flavoured.
If plain powder is what you are after, you have two closest options. The glutamine powders above are all unflavoured, 300g, 60 serves. And Raw Nutrition Intra Workout in unflavoured is the one unflavoured tub in the wider amino family, so it is the pick if you want to add aminos to your own drink mix without a flavour clash.
Where they differ in a real week of training
Across five sessions, the difference shows up in when you reach for the tub, not in how you feel on any single day.
BCAA and EAA get used the same way: one scoop in a bottle, sipped through the session. The choice is mostly flavour and label. Glutamine gets stirred into a shake once a day and forgotten about. Intra workout only shows up on the long sessions, because the carbs are wasted on a 40 minute lift.
Serve counts matter more than most people expect. A 20 serve tub used every session lasts a month. A 60 serve tub lasts three. Across our Amino and BCAA collection, 41 products, prices run from $39.25 to $127.95 as at 7 September 2026, and the gap is mostly serve count, not quality.

If you want to go deeper on the first choice, we wrote a full head to head in EAA vs BCAA. And if you are not sure the intra workout tub is worth it for your sessions, do you need an intra workout walks through when it is and is not.
FAQ
Is there an unflavoured BCAA or EAA in NZ? Not in our range. Every BCAA and EAA tub we stock is flavoured. If you want something plain to mix into other drinks, the unflavoured options are glutamine powders and Raw Nutrition Intra Workout in unflavoured.
Do I need BCAAs if I already take protein powder? Usually not. A whey or blend shake already contains the branched chain aminos plus the rest of the essential ones. BCAAs make more sense as a flavoured drink you sip through a session than as an extra source of amino acids.
What is the difference between BCAA and EAA? BCAA covers three aminos: leucine, isoleucine and valine. EAA covers all nine essential aminos, including those three. If you are choosing between them on paper, EAA is the more complete option.
Is glutamine worth taking? It is a cheap, plain powder that mixes into anything, and it is popular with people training most days of the week. Do not expect it to replace protein or total food intake. Our glutamine range is small, five products, because demand for it is small.
What does an intra workout have that a BCAA does not? Intra workout tubs are built to be sipped through a session, so they usually pair aminos with carbs and electrolytes. That extra fuel is the point of the format. They are also the biggest serve size in the amino range.
