Isolate and concentrate are both whey. The difference is how far the whey is filtered after it comes off the milk. That one step changes the price, the lactose content and the macros around the protein, but not the protein per scoop by much. Concentrate: less filtered, cheaper, a bit more carbs and fat
Whey concentrate is the least processed form. It keeps more of the natural lactose, carbs and fat from the milk, which is part of why it tastes rich and mixes into a proper milkshake. It is also the cheapest to make, so it is the cheapest to buy. Most tubs labelled simply "whey" are a concentrate or a blend built on one. MusclePharm Combat 100% Whey is a blend at about $2.31 a serve, and Basic Supplements Whey and Cellucor C4 Pro Whey sit near $2.46 to $2.50, all for 25g of protein a scoop.
Isolate: filtered further, less lactose, higher protein share
Whey isolate is run through extra filtration that strips out most of the lactose and fat and lifts the protein share per gram. That is a composition fact, not a health claim: an isolate simply carries less lactose than a concentrate. It costs more because of the extra processing. Dymatize Iso 100 is a batch-tested isolate at about $3.51 a serve, EHPlabs IsoPept Zero is $3.76, and Ghost Clear Whey is a clear isolate at $5.50 a serve with 100 calories, zero sugar and zero fat.
A blend splits the difference
A lot of tubs are a blend, which mixes concentrate and isolate so you land between the two on both price and macros. You get most of the value of a concentrate with a slightly leaner profile than concentrate alone. If you are not fussed either way, a blend is usually the sensible middle. The protein per scoop is closer than you think
Here is the part that surprises people: the protein per scoop is similar whichever you pick. The isolate delivers that 25g with less lactose and fat around it, and the concentrate delivers it for less money. Where hydrolysate fits
You will sometimes see a third word on the label: hydrolysate, or hydrolysed whey. This is whey that has been partly broken down already, and it usually sits on top of an isolate base. Some blends like Basic Supplements Whey list concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate together. For most people it is a minor point next to the isolate versus concentrate choice, so do not overthink it. Pick your type on price and lactose first, and treat hydrolysate as a nice extra rather than the deciding factor.
So which should you buy?
Buy a concentrate or blend if price per serve is your main concern, since it is the cheapest way to hit your protein. Buy an isolate if you prefer a lower-lactose powder or want the leanest macros around the protein. Neither is better as a protein, they are different points on the same filtration scale.
