If you have ordered from us before, there is a decent chance a free Basic Whey sample came in the box. Blue Marshmallow and Boston Cream Donut are the flavours we send as free samples, so plenty of you already have an opinion. The real question is which flavour is worth a full tub, and which ones are better tried small first.
The short answer
- Safest first buy: Boston Cream Donut or Chocolate. Sweet, creamy and easy to drink daily.
- Most fun: Blue Marshmallow. Tastes like the lolly aisle, and it is one of our two sample flavours.
- Most polarising: Baklava and Mango Cream. Great if you like them, a lot of tub if you do not.
- Not sure? Start with a 2lb tub before committing to 5lb.
Taste is personal, so treat this as a guide, not gospel. The ranking reflects which flavours our customers have tried most, general consensus, and how each style works with water and milk.
Why Basic Whey is worth caring about
Basic Whey is a no-nonsense daily protein. Each serve gives you 25g of protein from a triple blend of whey concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate, with 3g of sugar. The whey is Glanbia-sourced and rBST-free.
The three-way blend is the smart part. Concentrate keeps it creamy and affordable, isolate lifts the protein content, and a little hydrolysate adds a fast-digesting fraction. It works after training or as a between-meals top-up. For more on the brand, see the Basic Supplements guide.
The flavours, ranked
Top tier: order these with confidence
- Boston Cream Donut: vanilla custard with a sweet, bakery finish. Very easy to drink, especially with milk.
- Blue Marshmallow: sweet, playful and a bit nostalgic. If you liked the sample, the full tub will not disappoint.
- Chocolate: the reliable one. Goes with water, milk, oats, banana and coffee.
Solid middle: you will be happy with any of these
- Vanilla: plain in a good way. The best base for smoothies and baking.
- Churros: cinnamon sugar with a warm, doughy edge. A good pick if you get sick of chocolate.
- Mocha Java Chip: chocolate and coffee together. Great over ice or blended with a shot of espresso.
Wildcards: love them or leave them
- Baklava: honey, nut and pastry notes. Unusual for a protein, and very good if that sounds like your kind of dessert.
- Mango Cream: fruity and creamy, more like a mango smoothie than a lolly. Better with milk than water.
A quick mixing tip: most dessert flavours taste richer with milk and lighter with water. Start with around 250ml and adjust.
2lb vs 5lb: which size
Basic Whey comes in two sizes, and the maths is simple.
- 908g (2lb): roughly 25 to 27 serves for $74.85, around $2.90 a serve.
- 2.27kg (5lb): roughly 63 to 67 serves for $148.45, around $2.30 a serve.
The 5lb is the better buy once you know the flavour. The 2lb is the smarter first purchase, especially for a wildcard. We explain the trade-offs of the bigger tub in buying a 5lb tub. At the time of writing, not every flavour is in stock in both sizes, so check the product page for your favourite.
