Tongkat ali gets talked about like a miracle root. Scroll long enough and you will see claims that it does everything short of paying your power bill. The real picture is more modest and more useful: it has been studied for stress hormones, mood and strength markers, the results are encouraging, and the studies are small. Here is what that means if you are thinking about buying it in NZ.

The short answer

  • What it is: an extract of the Eurycoma longifolia root, also sold as longjack.
  • What it has been studied for: stress hormone profile and mood in moderately stressed adults, plus strength and hormone markers in a small group of active older adults.
  • What to expect: possible support over several weeks, not an overnight change. It works best on top of good sleep, food and training.
  • Who should skip it: anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or on regular medication without checking with their GP.

What tongkat ali is

Tongkat ali comes from the root of Eurycoma longifolia, a shrub native to South-East Asia. You will also see it called longjack. It has been used in traditional practice there for a very long time, which is part of why it has such a big reputation.

Modern supplements use a root extract rather than raw bark or powder. That matters, because the extract is what researchers have actually tested. A capsule of ground root is not the same thing.

What the studies measured

Two studies come up most often, and it helps to know what they actually looked at.

Stress hormones and mood. A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (Talbott and colleagues, 2013) gave moderately stressed adults a tongkat ali extract daily for several weeks. Compared with placebo, the group taking it showed a better stress hormone profile and improved mood markers. That is the main reason tongkat ali is often grouped with other stress-support herbs.

Active older adults. A small study by Henkel and colleagues (2014) looked at physically active seniors taking tongkat ali. It found increases in some strength and hormone markers over the study period.

The honest limits

Both studies were small. Small studies are a starting point, not a final answer. They also used specific standardised extracts, so a different product at a different dose may not behave the same way.

None of this adds up to a promise that tongkat ali will change your hormones, your physique or anything else. The fair summary is that it has been studied for stress, mood and strength markers, with encouraging early results. If a label or ad promises more than that, be sceptical. Our post on whether test boosters work covers the wider category with the same honest lens.

How people take it

Most people take tongkat ali once a day as a capsule, with or without food. The studies used a standardised extract at a fixed daily dose over several weeks, so consistency matters more than timing. Follow the dose on your label and do not stack several products that contain it.

You will see a lot of talk online about cycling, such as a few weeks on and a week or two off. There is no solid research behind any particular cycle. It is a personal preference, and some people like the break simply to check whether they notice a difference.

Give it at least a few weeks before you judge it, and change one thing at a time. If you start tongkat ali, a new program and a new diet in the same week, you will never know what helped.

Who should skip it

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, managing a medical condition or taking regular medication, skip it unless your GP says otherwise.

Label checks before you buy

A few quick checks will tell you a lot about any tongkat ali product:

  • The species name. Look for Eurycoma longifolia on the label, not just a brand name.
  • Extract, not just powder. The research used root extracts. A label should say it is an extract.
  • Dose per capsule and per day. It should be clear how much you are taking, with no hidden blend.
  • Extras. Know what else is in the capsule, especially if you already take other supplements.
  • Testing. If you compete in tested sport, look for third-party testing. Our tested-for-sport range is the place to start.

FAQ

What is tongkat ali? Tongkat ali is the root of Eurycoma longifolia, a shrub from South-East Asia that is also called longjack. It has a long history in traditional use, and today it is sold as a standardised extract in capsules.

What does tongkat ali do? It has been studied for stress hormones and mood in moderately stressed adults, and for strength and hormone markers in a small group of active older adults. The results are promising but the studies are small, so treat it as a possible support rather than a sure thing.

How long does tongkat ali take to work? The studies ran over several weeks rather than days. If you try it, give it at least a few weeks of daily use alongside good sleep and training before you judge it.

Can women take tongkat ali? Most of the research and marketing has focused on men, so there is less to go on for women. If you are a woman thinking about it, talk to your GP first, and skip it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Should I cycle tongkat ali? There is no solid research on cycling. Some people take it for a few weeks and then have a break, but that is personal preference rather than evidence. Follow the label and check with your GP if you plan to use it long term.
