Best Magnesium Supplement NZ: Pillar Performance and Nexus triple magnesium

You have been training six days a week, your calves keep cramping in the last set, and someone at the gym told you to take magnesium. So you search it, find forty products with different names on the front, and none of them tell you how much magnesium you are actually getting. That is the real problem, and it is a label problem more than a product problem.

Here is our honest position. Magnesium is one of the cheaper things you can add, the evidence for most of the claims on the front of the tub is limited, and the product you pick matters far less than whether you actually take it.

The short answer

  • If you want the lowest cost and the least fuss, Pillar Performance Triple Magnesium 60 Caps is $35.96 for 60 serves, which is $0.60 a serve. It is Informed Sport certified and has 576 reviews at 4.88.
  • If you would rather drink it, the 400g Pillar Triple Magnesium Powder in Berry is $77.85 for 80 serves, or $0.97 a serve. The 200g tub of the same powder is $50.85 for 40 serves, which works out dearer at $1.27.
  • Nexus Triple Magnesium is $48.85 for 50 serves of unflavoured powder, $0.98 a serve, and it lists the highest total magnesium per serve of anything we stock at 1650mg of magnesium compounds.
  • If you already drink an electrolyte every day, you may be getting magnesium and not know it. Check before you buy a second tub.

Elemental magnesium is not the number on the front

This is the bit that catches everyone. Magnesium never exists on its own in a supplement. It is bonded to something else, and the label often quotes the weight of that whole compound rather than the magnesium in it.

Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bonded to glycine. Magnesium citrate is bonded to citric acid. Magnesium oxide is bonded to oxygen and is the cheapest of the lot. The elemental magnesium you absorb is a fraction of the total weight in every case, and that fraction differs by form.

So when Nexus lists 1650mg and the Pillar powder lists 1050mg, those are compound weights, not elemental magnesium. The Nexus figure being higher does not automatically mean you absorb more. If you want the breakdown of how the three common forms differ in absorption and gut tolerance, we wrote that up separately in magnesium glycinate vs citrate. The labels do print it. Pillar Triple Magnesium tablets carry 155 mg of elemental magnesium per tablet (the label serve is 2 tablets, so 310 mg, which makes a 60-tablet bottle 30 label serves at $1.20 a serve rather than 60 at $0.60). The Pillar 400 g powder lists 310 mg of elemental magnesium per 5 g scoop from 50 mg citrate, 210 mg amino acid chelate and 50 mg glycinate. Nexus lists 1,650 mg each of citrate, bisglycinate and 20% amino acid chelate per 5 g scoop but prints no elemental total, so treat its dose as unverified until you read the pack.

What "triple magnesium" actually means

Both Pillar and Nexus use the same idea. Instead of one form, they blend three, usually a glycinate for tolerance, a citrate for absorption, and a third form to round out the dose. It is a sensible approach and it is why both brands sit at the pricier end.

The alternative is a single cheap form, usually oxide, which is poorly absorbed and more likely to upset your stomach. We do not stock a standalone magnesium oxide product, and we are not planning to.

Comparison: every magnesium option we stock

Prices as at 2 September 2026. Magnesium column is the total magnesium compounds listed per serve, not elemental magnesium.

Product Form Price Serves Price per serve Magnesium per serve Informed Sport
Pillar Performance Triple Magnesium 60 Caps Capsule $35.96 60 $0.60 553mg Yes
Pillar Triple Magnesium Powder 400g, Berry Powder $77.85 80 $0.97 1050mg Yes
Nexus Triple Magnesium 250g, Unflavoured Powder $48.85 50 $0.98 1650mg No
Pillar Triple Magnesium Powder 200g, Berry Powder $50.85 40 $1.27 1050mg Yes
Pillar Triple Magnesium Pouch 200g, Lemon Lime Powder $50.85 40 $1.27 1050mg Yes
Ghost Hydration 360g, Lemon Crush Electrolyte $56.85 40 $1.42 565mg No
Pillar Electrolyte Hydration Sticks 210g, Citrus Electrolyte $50.85 30 $1.70 80mg Yes

The Pillar 90 cap bottle is $47.69 for 90 serves, which is $0.53 a serve and the cheapest option we list, but it is currently out of stock. The 200g powders come in Berry, Pineapple Coconut and Lemon Lime at the same price, so pick on flavour rather than value.

Two things stand out in that table. Capsules are far cheaper per serve than powder, and the 400g powder saves you 30 cents a serve over the 200g for the same product. If you know you will finish it, buy the big one.

What the evidence actually supports

Magnesium is a real nutrient with real jobs in the body, including muscle contraction and energy metabolism. That part is not in dispute. What is much shakier is the claim that supplementing helps if you are already eating enough.

Examine.com's magnesium page is a fair read of the literature: benefits show up most clearly in people with low intake, and results in well fed people are inconsistent. Athletes training hard with poor diets are the group with the most plausible case, which is the argument we lay out in magnesium for athletes.

On sleep, the evidence is limited and the studies are small. We are not going to tell you a tub of powder will fix your sleep. If you want the honest version of that question, it lives at best magnesium for sleep NZ.

Zinc and magnesium combinations get asked about a lot. We do not currently stock a dedicated ZMA product, and the background on why that formula got popular is in ZMA benefits.

Working out what you actually need

Start with what you already take. A serve of Ghost Hydration lists 565mg of magnesium compounds and a Pillar Electrolyte stick lists 80mg. If you are on the Ghost daily, adding a full magnesium powder on top is probably money you do not need to spend. Our electrolyte sachets guide covers that overlap in more detail.

Then be realistic about the format. Powder at $0.97 a serve costs you $354 a year if you take it every day. Capsules at $0.60 a serve cost $219. If the only reason you want powder is that you like the taste, that difference is worth a think.

Who probably does not need one: anyone eating a decent amount of green vegetables, nuts, legumes and whole grains who is not training hard. Magnesium is not a performance supplement in the way creatine is. If you have a hundred dollars and you are picking one thing, creatine wins that argument on evidence every time.

What is the best magnesium supplement in NZ?

For value, the Pillar Performance Triple Magnesium 60 cap bottle at $0.60 a serve. For a powder you can drink, the 400g Pillar Triple Magnesium Powder at $0.97 a serve is the cheapest per serve of the powders we stock. Nexus Triple Magnesium is close behind at $0.98 and lists more total magnesium per serve.

Is magnesium glycinate better than citrate?

They behave differently rather than one being flatly better. Glycinate is generally easier on the stomach, citrate is well absorbed and has a laxative effect at higher doses. Both Pillar and Nexus blend multiple forms rather than making you choose.

How much magnesium should I take a day?

Follow the serve size on the label of the product you buy. The catalogue figures we list are total magnesium compounds per serve, not elemental magnesium, so do not add them up across products expecting them to match a dietary target.

Should I take magnesium at night?

Timing is a preference, not a rule. Plenty of people take it in the evening because the powder makes a pleasant drink before bed. There is no strong evidence that a specific time of day changes the outcome.

Do I need magnesium if I already use an electrolyte?

Often not. Ghost Hydration lists 565mg of magnesium compounds per serve and Pillar Electrolyte sticks list 80mg. Check your current tub before adding a second product.

Which magnesium is drug tested safe?

The Pillar Performance magnesium range carries Informed Sport certification, both the capsules and the powders. Nexus Triple Magnesium does not carry that certification in our catalogue. Our guide on how to check supplement testing explains how to verify a batch yourself.
