Ghost Hydration vs Ghost BCAA: which one do you need?

Ghost Hydration replaces sweat losses, Ghost BCAA adds aminos. Here is when each makes sense, when neither does, and how to use both in NZ.

You are standing in the Ghost section, looking at two tubs with the same bright branding and nearly the same price. One says Hydration, the other says BCAA, and both promise a better session. They do very different jobs, and most people only need one of them most of the time.

The short answer

  • Sweating hard, training long or working outside in the heat? Get Ghost Hydration. Sodium is the thing you actually lose in sweat, and this replaces it.
  • Training fasted or doing long sessions with no food in you? Ghost BCAA V2 makes more sense.
  • Eating plenty of protein already and training for under an hour? Honestly, you can skip both and drink water.
  • Want both? They pair well. Split them across the day rather than guessing which one matters more.

If you only buy one, Hydration is the more useful product for most Kiwis. Losing fluid and sodium drags performance down for nearly everyone. Missing BCAAs rarely does if your diet is sorted.

What Ghost Hydration does

Ghost Hydration is a sugar-free electrolyte drink mix. Each scoop carries the full electrolyte spectrum: sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride and calcium. On top of that you get taurine, vitamin C and marine-sourced minerals.

The important one is sodium. The American College of Sports Medicine's position stand on fluid replacement singles it out as the main electrolyte lost in sweat, and the one worth replacing on long or hot sessions. Water alone rehydrates you, but it does not put the salt back. If you finish a summer session with white streaks on your cap, that is the gap Hydration fills. For the numbers, see our guide on how much sodium you need.

Because it has no sugar, it will not fuel you the way a sports drink does. That is a plus on desk days and in a fat-loss phase, and a limitation on a three-hour ride. If you are unsure which camp you are in, read our take on sugar vs sugar-free electrolytes.

A tub is 40 serves, so it also works as an everyday "make water taste good" habit.

What Ghost BCAA does

Ghost BCAA V2 gives you 7g of branched-chain amino acids per scoop in the classic 2:1:1 ratio of leucine, isoleucine and valine. The aminos are vegan-fermented, the drink is sugar-free, and it includes AstraGin to help absorption. It mixes smooth with no clumps.

Leucine is the amino that switches on muscle protein building, which is why BCAAs became popular. The honest catch: if you already eat enough protein, BCAAs add little for muscle growth. Whey, meat, eggs and dairy all contain them. Our breakdown of EAA vs BCAA goes deeper on that.

So where does it fit? Fasted morning sessions, long training blocks between meals, and people who drink more water when it tastes like lollies. That last one is a real benefit, not a joke. If flavour is your deciding factor, we sorted the whole range in Ghost BCAA flavours ranked. Kiwi Strawberry and Lemon Crush are good places to start.

A tub of BCAA V2 is 30 serves.

Which one for which day

Situation Better pick Why
Long, sweaty session Ghost Hydration Replaces sodium and fluid lost in sweat
Fasted training Ghost BCAA Aminos when there is no meal in you
Desk day Either, or plain water Flavour helps you drink more
Hot tradie day outdoors Ghost Hydration All-day sweat losses add up

The pattern is simple. Sweat decides Hydration. Food timing decides BCAA.

Can you mix them?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Nothing in either tub clashes with the other. The easiest approach is to split them:

  • During training: a scoop of BCAA in your bottle, especially if you trained fasted.
  • After training or through a hot afternoon: a scoop of Hydration to top up electrolytes.

You can also put a scoop of each in one big bottle. Use a bit more water than normal so it is not overly sweet, and pick flavours that play nicely. Lemon Crush with Lemon Crush is the safe bet.

What you should not do is treat either one as a replacement for food. BCAAs do not replace a protein-rich meal, and a sugar-free electrolyte will not fuel a long endurance effort on its own.

FAQ

What is the difference between Ghost Hydration and Ghost BCAA? Ghost Hydration is a sugar-free electrolyte mix with sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, calcium, taurine and vitamin C. Ghost BCAA V2 is a sugar-free amino drink with 7g of BCAAs in a 2:1:1 ratio. One replaces what you sweat out, the other adds amino acids.

Does Ghost BCAA have caffeine? Ghost BCAA V2 is not sold as a caffeinated product and caffeine is not listed in our product copy. Labels can change between batches, so check the tub before you drink it late at night.

Can I take Ghost Hydration and Ghost BCAA together? Yes. Most people split them across the day: BCAA during a session and Hydration afterwards or on a hot day. You can also mix a scoop of each in a big bottle if you like the taste, just use a little more water so it is not too sweet.

Do I need BCAAs if I already drink protein shakes? Probably not. If you hit your daily protein target from food and shakes, you are already getting plenty of BCAAs. Ghost BCAA earns its place for fasted training, long sessions between meals, or as a tasty way to drink more water.

How many serves are in Ghost Hydration and Ghost BCAA? Ghost Hydration is 40 serves per 360g tub. Ghost BCAA V2 is 30 serves per 345g tub. Both are sugar-free and listed as vegan-friendly.
