Pre-Workouts Ranked by Intensity: Find Your Stim Tier

The strongest pre-workout in NZ will absolutely light you up, but the strongest one on the shelf isn't automatically the right one for you. The smarter question is which intensity tier you actually train best in, then matching a tub to that.

Here's the no-hype version: intensity is a tool, not a flex. A 400mg scoop doesn't build more muscle than a 150mg one. It just hits your nervous system harder. Some people need that. Plenty don't. So rather than rank every tub from weakest to hardest and call it a day (we've already done the full caffeine table on our strongest pre-workout leaderboard), this is a ladder you climb on purpose. Find your rung, get comfortable, then move up only if you need to.

The four intensity tiers at a glance

We sort caffeine per scoop into four bands. Pick the one that matches your current tolerance, not your ego.

Tier Caffeine per scoop Who it's for
Mild Under 150mg (or stim-free pump) New to pre-workout, caffeine-sensitive, or training late
Moderate 150–250mg Regular lifters who want a lift without the shakes
Strong 250–350mg Experienced, caffeine-tolerant, big sessions
Extreme 350mg and up High tolerance only, morning sessions, know your limit

Figures are per scoop and shift with reformulations and flavours, so always check the current product page before you commit. A quick anchor while you read: a long black sits around 120–150mg of caffeine, so a 300mg scoop is roughly two of them in one hit.

Tier 1 — Mild: under 150mg (and stim-free pumps)

Who it's for: anyone new to pre-workout, anyone sensitive to caffeine, and anyone training in the evening who still wants to sleep. This is also the tier for the pump chasers, because stim-free formulas give you the blood-flow and focus without touching caffeine at all.

What it feels like: a clean, gentle lift. You'll notice tighter focus and a better pump, with no jaw-clenching, no racing heart and no crash afterwards. It's the difference between "switched on" and "wired".

Try: Ghost Pump V2Ghost Pump V2Ghost Pump V2$63.00Shop → is our go-to stim-free pump and one of our best-selling tubs full stop: zero caffeine, all pump. Nexus AMP3D 2.0 is another solid stim-free option. If you want a little caffeine but nothing scary, a batch-tested pick like Cellucor C4 Sport (around 135mg) or CBUM Thavage (about 130mg) sits right at the top of this tier. Browse the lot in our stim-free pre-workout range.

Safety note: this is the only tier we'd hand a first-timer, so start here even if your mates are on something bigger.

Tier 2 — Moderate: 150–250mg

Who it's for: regular trainers who've had pre-workout before and want a proper lift without the shakes. This is the sweet spot for most everyday lifters.

What it feels like: a solid, reliable kick. Energy comes up within 20 to 30 minutes, focus sharpens, and you can still hold a conversation between sets. Enough to push a hard session, not enough to leave you buzzing at 10pm.

Try: Nexus PER4M 2.0Nexus PER4M 2.0Nexus PER4M 2.0$79.96Shop → is our best-selling pre-workout and lands right in the middle of this tier at 250mg. MusclePharm Assault Sport (250mg) and RAW Essential Pre-Workout (200mg) are both dialled in here, and Ryse Godzilla sits around 175–200mg. Ghost Legend V4 lands about here too , and EHPlabs Pride is a popular pick we'd put around this range .

Safety note: one scoop is one scoop, so don't double it just because the tub is "only" moderate.

Tier 3 — Strong: 250–350mg

Who it's for: experienced lifters with a real caffeine tolerance who want a big, obvious hit for heavy sessions. Not a starting point.

What it feels like: full send. You'll feel it fast and hard: sharp focus, strong energy, often tingles from the beta-alanine. Great for a 6am heavy day, a bad idea after 4pm if you'd like to sleep.

Try: MusclePharm WreckageMusclePharm WreckageMusclePharm Wreckage$63.95Shop → runs around 310mg. Pharmafreak Achilles Freak 300 and Ryse Loaded Pre Max both sit at 300mg, and RAW Essential Charged tops the tier at 350mg. There's more of them in our max-stim pre-workout collection.

Safety note: half-scoop your first session on any of these, because 300mg on a fresh tolerance is a lot.

Tier 4 — Extreme: 350mg and up

Who it's for: high-tolerance, seasoned users only, the kind who genuinely know their limit and train early. If you're not sure whether you belong here, you don't, yet.

What it feels like: relentless. This is 350mg-plus in a single scoop, the kind of energy that's more about proving a point than needing it. For most people it's overkill, and the crash later can be real if you don't manage the rest of your day's caffeine.

Try: Ronnie Coleman Yeah BuddyRonnie Coleman Yeah BuddyRonnie Coleman Yeah Buddy$58.95Shop → is a classic at 420mg. Ghost Legend All Out V2 sits around 400mg . For the full ranked ceiling of everything we stock, our strongest pre-workout leaderboard has the complete caffeine table.

Safety note: never stack this with pre-lift coffee, an energy drink or a fat-burner, because the caffeine adds up fast.

How to climb the ladder safely

Moving up a tier is fine. Skipping straight to the top isn't. A few rules keep it sensible:

  • Assess your tolerance honestly. Count what you already drink in a day. Two flat whites is roughly 250–300mg before you've even scooped anything.
  • Don't start at the top. If pre-workout is new, begin in the mild tier and give it a couple of weeks. You can always go stronger; you can't un-feel a 400mg jitter session.
  • Half-scoop test any new tub. Same product, half the dose, see how you respond before you commit to a full serve.
  • Cycle your stims. Take a lighter week every 6 to 8 weeks, or rotate in a stim-free pump day. Caffeine tolerance creeps up, and chasing it with bigger scoops is a losing game.
  • Watch your total daily caffeine. The scoop isn't the only source. Coffee, energy drinks and some fat-burners all count.

One honest note on the numbers: label figures move around. Ryse Loaded, for example, gets quoted anywhere from about 270mg to 390mg depending on the source , and ProSupps Hyde Nightmare shows around 125mg in our data, which looks low for that brand . Trust the current product page over any list, including this one.

So, which tier are you?

If you're just starting out, don't overthink it. Begin mild and read our no-hype starter guide first. If you've got a tolerance and want the full range from gentle to genuinely extreme, our pre-workout collection has it sorted. Not sure where a specific tub lands? Check the caffeine figure on its product page, match it to the tiers above, and climb from there. The best pre-workout isn't the strongest one; it's the one you can train hard on and still sleep that night.
